Birdwatching is fun simple and inexpensive.

Birdwatching (now more commonly known as birding) is one of the most popular and fastest-growing hobbies in the world. Indeed, it is the second-most popular outdoor hobby in the United States, after gardening but well ahead of hunting and fishing. Unlike most other forms of life, birds lend themselves to human observation. They are largely diurnal, noisy, relatively easy to identify and occur virtually throughout the landscape. Their perky habits, melodious songs and the magic of flight render them objects of human fascination.

For details on how to join your local bird club contact BirdLife South Africa, the leading southern African bird organization, at P.O. Box 515, Randburg 2125. The closest local branch of BirdLife SA in KwaZulu-Natal is the Natal Bird Club, P.O. Box 1218, Durban 4000. Another bird club in the region is the South Coast Trogons Bird Club, which is affiliated to BirdLife SA; its Chairman Graham Acheson can be contacted at tel. (039) 6812126 or P.O. Box 215, Umtentweni 4235.
